2019 Oct – RPG, Shanghai

The International Conference on Renewable Power Generation (RPG) is one of the Institute of Engineering & Technology‘s most successful international events, with the 8th edition held on 24 & 25 October 2019 in Shanghai, China.

Wei Liu presented his paper Start-up Strategy for Modular Multilevel Converters with Modified Nearest Level Modulation Method for which he, his colleague Dr Gen Li, and his supervisors Dr Carlos Ugalde-Loo and Prof Jun Liang were delighted to receive Best Conference Paper, 3rd prize. The paper explains a procedure which can effectively avoid the inrush currents and speed up the charging process of modular multilevel converters (known as MMCs) during the start-up process. Wei received useful feedback from colleagues and discussed recent renewable energy and power grid developments in China, such as electric vehicles, high-speed trains, 5G networks and smart grid. This provided him with many new ideas for his career development.
