Gayan‘s secondment at DTU Wind Energy in spring 2019 was the perfect opportunity for him to expand his knowledge on the wide range of important research conducted there. He was able to complete his secondment work, as planned, thanks to the support from other researchers and supervisors in the Integration & Planning section. He had an interesting conversation with Middelgrunden Wind Farm‘s maintenance engineer who explained he would prefer the size and weight of offshore turbine components to be smaller in the future, to ease maintenance performance. This motivated Gayan in his research on DC collection systems for offshore wind plants. He incorporated some of his secondment ideas into a paper which he delivered at the International Conference on Industrial & Information Systems, Sri Lanka. While in Denmark, he enjoyed comparing old Danish windmills to Middelgrunden’s sea turbines!
