Anubhav Jain attended the ORE Catapult & Fraunhofer IWES (Institute for Wind Energy Systems) online conference, Virtual Wind III: Current challenges for offshore wind energy in the North Sea.
ORE Catapult is the United Kingdom’s leading innovation & research centre for offshore renewable energy (ORE). Although established by the UK government, it is independent and conducts tests, demonstrations and research, while linking industry with academia.
The conference covered electrical infrastructure and floating offshore wind, and included presentations from Fraunhofer IWES, WindEurope, the University of Strathclyde, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE), Vestas Nacelles Deutschland and SINTEF Energy Research.
Anubhav found the talk by Aris Gkountaras (SGRE) on ‘Trends in grid integration of offshore and onshore wind’ especially interesting. He highlighted that grid forming wind turbines will become inevitable. However, questions remained on how many were needed, and how to adapt protection and control for islanding operation and blackstart.
