Gayan Abeynayake had the pleasure of representing IEEE Region 8 (UK & Ireland) in organising the 1st IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) Student & Young Professionals Symposium. As an IEEE* volunteer for over 10 years, he was able to share his previous experience with fellow volunteers across the world, and enjoy exchanging ideas.
He was privileged to moderate the technical talk presented by Dr Thiwanka Wijekoon (Power Electronics Technology Leader, Huawei’s Nuremberg Research Center, Germany) on ‘Energy Storage System Integration to Solar PV – Challenges, Trends and Applications Scenarios’. Dr Wijekoon is an industry expert in power electronics, holding 18 patents to date, with 21 more patent applications pending!
This was the 1st time Gayan had moderated a technical talk, so he gained valuable experience in professional planning and time-keeping. Despite the symposium being virtual, audience interaction was lively, as attendees were particularly interested in the industrial aspect.
