KU Leuven – Gayan Abeynayake

Gayan Abeynayake completed a 3-month virtual secondment at KU Leuven, Belgium, January – March 2021. His work extended from cable network dependency on offshore wind-farm availability assessments, to non-Markovian context*. The main objective was to identify the availability calculation variations with different stochastic models** available to represent sub-sea cables.

Towards the end, the KU Leuven ELECTA group invited him to present his work to fellow researchers. This led to an interesting question & answer session on the future DC collection system concept and its reliability.

He was grateful to Prof Dirk Van Hertem and Dr Tom Van Acker for their time and interesting discussions – especially as their collaborative work led to the IEEE journal publication, Analytical Model for Availability Assessment of Large-Scale Offshore Wind Farms including their Collector System .

* Non-Markovian context: A sequence of possible events in which the probability of each event depends on the state attained in the past events.

** Stochastic models: A set of tools for estimating probability distributions of potential outcomes by allowing for random variation in one or more inputs over time.
