Wei Liu conducted a secondment from October 2020 to January 2021 at China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI), Beijing. He worked alongside Dr Yiwen Fan, Dr Hongzhi Liu, Dr Yan Li and Dr Yongning Chi in the Renewable Energy Integration department.
His research topic was ‘renewable energy integration with weak alternating current grids’, testing Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) based models through the simulation software PSCAD/EMTDC (Power system computer-aided design/Electromagnetic transients including direct currents).
He was appointed Committee Assistant for the International Electrotechnical Commission’s renewable energy group, known as IEC TC-8/SC-8A. This led to discussions with energy experts, and his attending the IEC committee meeting in Suzhou.
He concluded his visit by delivering a presentation to CEPRI colleagues on his research, Cardiff University and InnoDC.
The experience broadened Wei’s knowledge in industry and in China’s low-carbon road map, and left him feeling confident in his career choice within renewable energy developments.
