Gayan Abeynayake‘s secondment at DTU Wind Energy in spring 2019 was the perfect opportunity for him to expand his knowledge on DTU’s wide range of important research. He was able to complete his secondment work, as planned, thanks to the support from other researchers and supervisors in the Integration & Planning section.
He valued his conversation with Middelgrunden Wind Farm‘s maintenance engineer who explained he would prefer the size and weight of future offshore turbine components to be smaller, to ease maintenance. This motivated Gayan in his research on direct current (DC) collection systems for offshore wind plants.
He incorporated some of his secondment ideas into a paper which he delivered at the International Conference on Industrial & Information Systems, Sri Lanka. While in Denmark, he enjoyed comparing old Danish windmills to Middelgrunden’s sea turbines!
