Daniel Westerman Spier completed a 3-month secondment at CITCEA-UPC, Barcelona, September – November 2020. Due to the pandemic situation in Catalonia, he performed the secondment remotely. This was not an issue, since the planned research was computer-based, and he had regular meetings with his supervisors, Oriol Gomis-Bellmunt and Eduardo Prieto-Araujo to discuss progress.
During his post, Daniel focused on the modular multilevel converter (MMC)’s internal currents reference calculation to improve the converter’s internal energy balance during AC (alternating current) grid voltage sags. He acquired a deeper understanding of the converter and has since submitted a journal paper (which is under review) based on his secondment results. See Siemens photo below right for an example of an MMC.
